The Pilgrimage to the Mother Cabrini Shrine is the sister pilgrimage to Pellegrinaggio a Piedi - Macerata-Loreto, Italy, www.pellegrinaggio.org (in Italian). This walking pilgrimage was held for the first time in 1978 as a gesture of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary at the end of the school year. In the following years the pilgrimage came to reach thousands of participants from all over Italy and abroad.
The Cabrini Pilgrimage in Chicago was born in 2013 after reopening Mother Cabrini Shrine at the end of 2012. A group of friends in the Catholic lay movement Communion and Liberation learned about the extraordinary life of Mother Cabrini during the historic restoration and conservation of her belongings. The Shrine became the important place of friendship with "Chicago's own saint." The group of friends, who had also participated in the Loreto and Czestochowa pilgrimages in the past, decided to make a special walking pilgrimage to the Shrine. In the following year, the Macerata-Loreto pilgrimage organizers extended their gesture of friendship by inviting Chicago to walk together.
